Fishing The Big Thompson
You are welcome to fish along our stretch of the Big Thompson river, we privately stock the river with Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout. You may eat what you catch, but encourage you to let the little ones grow-up.
Fishing a "cold" and fast moving mountain stream, or in one of many nearby high altitude lakes takes patients mostly on the part of Dad! Use either a fly or spinner reel. It looks easy, but's it not. The local fisherman's lore suggests it's all about the "flow rate"... and that can change rapidly! Early season during the ice break, when the river begins to open up and thaw, will provide experts a chance at some great early season strike's, at the lower elevations, while the high altitude areas remain frozen.
From late April, through pretty much all of May, and up until the heavy spring run off starts after memorial day provides great water levels and flow, making the river approachable with youngsters.
Look for deep slow moving water, quiet pools along the banks, or behind large rocks. And if she really starts rollin' find a good seam, just off the bank, those trout will dart out and take a bite... A small or medium size hook baited with salmon eggs, worms, and not much weight seems to get the most strikes. Fishing is allowed inside the national park, with different rules and regulations.
Several outfitters in town provide bait, tackle, and the required license for those over 15 years of age.
Guided tours are also available from several expert local outfitters. We recommend
